March 2023 industrial enclosures newsletter Electronic and electrical equipment is frequently installed in areas where environmental issues are a major consideration when deciding which material should be used for the enclosure. In addition to high mechanical strength and impact resistance, stainless steel is also corrosion and chemical resistant and it is therefore the default material in many industries: food and beverage manufacturing, pharmaceutical production, the oil and gas industries, marine equipment, water treatment plants and the mining sector. Hammond is a major manufacturer of stainless steel enclosures, fabricated from 304 material and also available in 316 grade. For internal use, 304 grade material is normally more than adequate. The higher grade 316 stainless material, which contains up to 3% molybdenum, gives increased corrosion resistance against many industrial chemicals and solvents. Our most popular family is the Eclipse Junior wall mounting family. Ideal for the majority of applications Eclipse is available as standard in from 102 x 102 x 76mm to 406 x 356 x 254mm. The body and cover are formed from 1.6mm material, with smooth, continuously welded seams without knock outs, cutouts, or holes. The design incorporates a formed lip on the enclosure to exclude flowing liquids and contaminants, and the continuously hinged cover provides 180° opening for good access to the housed equipment. To prevent unauthorised access and to increase vandal resistance, the door latches are tool operated. Environmental sealing is achieved through a seamless poured-in place gasket. The family is sealed to IP66, NEMA Type 3R, 4, 4X, 12 and 13 and are UL Approved.
The ultimate Hammond stainless steel enclosure is the UL Approved HYJ family. Sealed to IP69, NEMA 3R, 12, 4, 4X, it is optimised for use in the food and pharmaceutical industries where regular high pressure, high temperature washdown with 15 l/m at up to 80°C from 150 to 200mm is a routine requirement. Available in five sizes from 202 x 124 x 102mm to 416 x 338 x 203mm, the symmetric rectangular design means that the units can be mounted either vertically or horizontally; all sides are sloped to ensure that water quickly drains off after spray cleaning and a super-smooth finish to all surfaces also aids water drain. The HYJ cover is secured to the body with six crevice-free hex head bolts fitted with a silicone washer. IP69 sealing is achieved by a distinctive blue "hygiene" coloured silicone gasket that is fitted beyond the door edges, so that there are no crevices in which dirt can collect. Version with pre-punched holes for mounting pushbuttons also available. The blue gasket can be easily removed for cleaning or replacement.
